It’s an irrefutable fact that the world and the people we see and meet today are largely through our devices, from the point of view of the people who capture them. Every photograph has a story and a message to tell and sometimes like in other forms of art it exists because it has every right to exist. Well, I’ll stop myself before I pour all my Art & Lit. class and get straight to the story of the twin photographers, Karthikha and Prathibha, who got me tap-tap-ping on my keys.
One can easily imagine women in the fields of Banking, Teaching, Business etc. but not really as full-time photographers, not until recently. We found it incredibly necessary to get to hear the experiences of a female photographer but we got lucky and found not one but two incredibly talented photographers, Karthikha and Prathibha, the artistic duo who challenged the conventions and started it basic but got phenomenal in their field in Madurai.
Pictures have become a common medium of communication, thanks to the pocket devices we now have 100’s pictures sleeping in our gallery waiting to see the light. This is how it started with our duo too who started their journey clicking pics of mugs and their friends on their phones. The game levelled up when they got hold of their star – Canon EOS 700D which got them distilling the noise and capturing the essence of the world that they saw. Unlike many, our duo sees the world differently, noticing the details and sharing them with others in the best possible hues. One look at their profile and you’ll get why they’re such a hit among women. And you’ll also start believing the trivia that women and men see the world differently.
When asked how and where they learn to click them, she simply said that it was simply through practice and they self-taught themselves. That’s when I realized that when someone has the desire and passion to do something they don’t need a guide from outside because the guiding light is within them leading them on the right path and opening many new unseen doors.
The right adjective to describe this duo would be the spirited sisters, I’ll tell you why. We know that our society and education system assesses a person’s skills solely through bookish education leaving no room for the artist within them to explore and survive. So the artists who have made it successful one should say have made it not because of their education but despite their education. This fact is even more blaring when Karthikha recounted how she cleared 26 of her arrears in one go when she was posed with the threat of a future away from her camera and her sister. The sisters live by the quote, “One could do anything if they put their heart into it”.
Photographers are dedicated individuals who trade not just their time but also their health to save our memories. I can’t imagine carrying a heavy object in a position for hours to capture good pictures, that’s possible only if there’s love and dedication for the heart. This duo is so dedicated that in their elemental years they’d even travel beyond their pay to the background chidings of their parents to click pictures. When asked why they did it, they shrugged it off saying it’s for practice, experience and contacts and looking back now it’s all worth it. Cos look at their parents, they are super proud of their children’s feat. From their first car to now their first house these kids are taking their parent’s places, which is the desire of many of us.
Their one advice for all budding photographers is plainly to never miss out on any opportunities. They still accept small projects between big projects, the reason? Because they detest being at home, missing out on opportunities. Another moral which one could take from their lives is to never give up at any point, there could be times when life gets uncertain and we might find us stranded like they were in their college days, but life goes on and the only way to survive is through moving forward and not settling to the currents of life.
Therefore let’s take charge and let the spirit within us guide us through.
